A lifetime of intense productivity, spent engaging, among others, with Goethe, Nietzsche, Freud, and Heidegger, continues to shape the discursive agenda of our own day. Kaufmann’s books continue to be read his translations and anthologies are in use some sixty years after their publication. His achievement is not a byway or backwater in intellectual history: it is still visible in the humanities. There is no comparable study of Kaufmann examining his place in cultural memory. For the moment, Corngold’s effort is sui generis. The book has the potential to renew interest in Kaufmann (1921–80) and establish his rank as a major writer of his generation and even to revivify the humanities in the present. Stanley Corngold has written a 744-page book on Walter Kaufmann, a Princeton professor, and prolific, charismatic writer and philosopher. Science is looking for one theory that ties together the two main theories of relativity and quantum mechanics. He also wondered if there was a time when everything was in a single tiny place. In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton devised his own laws related to gravity and theorized that all stars should exert this force on one another. This theory wasn’t really challenged until Nicholas Copernicus showed that planets including Earth orbit the sun. Though people in ancient Greece figured out that the earth is round, thinkers like Aristotle still thought the earth was at the center of everything else. Stephen Hawking details some of those breakthroughs, including a discussion on how our understanding has evolved over time. Where did the universe and everything in it come from? Modern science has developed new technology that allows us to answer such questions. 1-Page Summary of A Brief History of Time Overall Summary The exchange between Adso and William does not exist in the manuscript. At that point I realized that a disturbing thing had happened. But then a reader pointed out to me that on the following page, Bernard Gui, threatening the cellarer with torture, says: “Justice is not inspired by haste, as the Pseudo Apostles believe, and the justice of God has centuries at its disposal.” And the reader rightly asked me what connection I had meant to establish between the haste feared by William and the absence of haste extolled by Bernard. And William answers: “Haste.” I loved, and still love, these two lines very much. “What terrifies you most in purity?” Adso asks.
